Zapatista Teacher’s Death

Commemorated in Phoenix

Location:  Front of Mexican Consulate
                 320 E. McDowell Rd.
Date:        May 24, 2014
Time:          10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon

Since January 1, 1994 the EZLN Zapatista National Liberation Army, comprised mostly of indigenous Maya communities, has defied the Mexican Federal Army by building autonomous municipalities. They have been a model of good government, governing themselves without federal government manipulating their decision making.

On may 2nd the 20 year tense truce, with sporadic deadly confrontations, was shattered when heavily armed para-military groups financed by the government destroyed a school and a clinic located inside Zapatista held territory. In the aftermath they ambushed and killed the teacher and wounded 15 community members.

Saturday the fallen teacher known as Galeano will be buried and we will hold a commemoration and protest to let the Mexican government know along with the entire world that we will not permit the attacks against the Zapatistas or any other indigenous groups in Mexico.
