Atentamente:

Equal in dignity and rights is one of the fundamental pillars for the realization of peaceful coexistence in social harmony, but history reveals that as Maya Peoples of Guatemala we have been deprived of these rights for more than 500 years.

National Strike of the Maya Peoples

Reasons:

As Maya Peoples, we have been and continue to be those who contribute to the economy of this State and it is clearly demonstrated should we strike and refuse to work the entire economy in Guatemala will come to a standstill.

Our political proposal is to institutionalize the practice of Life with Dignity in all policies of the State of Guatemala. Therefore we call for the effective participation of legitimate and representative authorities of the Pueblo Maya chosen through our processes of community assemblies.

That shall continue to defend our lands, territories, and our natural resources with wisdom and valor, addressing the threats and attacks we suffer companies perpetrated by the corporations that collude in complicity with the authorities of the Government of Guatemala.

That as an example of political maturity and in respect for the Rule of Law, we have operated within official legalities to sue the State demanding respect for our legitimate rights under the Constitution and International Conventions, yet the result is that we keep accumulating decisions by the courts in NEGATION of our rights.

Therefore, today across the entire country, we are in the streets, in the parks and on the roads to reflect and reinforce our pact of unity in defense of life and determine not to leave these issues in the hands of puppet politicians of the national and international oligarchy who always have always brought us harm and continue to do so.

Our participation in the next general election will be oriented to establish a balance of powers among the existing entities, and facilitate the peaceful and democratic transition of Guatemala towards a new constituent assembly of plurinational character.

"Without the effective participation of our Maya Peoples there can be no real development that will be inclusive, sustainable and geared towards combating poverty.”

Sincerely:
